Employee Benefit Package

There’s more to a job than just a paycheck. August Home Publishing Professionals have a wide selection of benefits to choose from:

Health Insurance

Available to full-time August Home Professionals and their dependents. August Home currently uses Wellmark BCBS as our health insurance provider. August Home Publishing and the Professional share the cost of premiums.

Dental Insurance

Available to full-time August Home Professionals and dependents. Delta Dental is currently our dental insurance provider and August Home and the Professional share the cost of the benefit.

Voluntary Vision

Available to full-time August Home Professionals and dependents. Avesis is currently our voluntary vision provider. The Professional pays the entire premium for this benefit.

Life Insurance

For you, your spouse and children. Life insurance, with an accidental death and dismemberment clause, is available through The Hartford. August Home Publishing pays the entire premium for this life insurance.

Voluntary Life Insurance

Supplemental Life Insurance is available to August Home Professionals and dependents at an additional premium. The Hartford is our current supplemental life provider.

Long-Term Disability Insurance

This policy is intended to replace 60% of your basic monthly pay (less similar benefits from other sources, such as Social Security), up to a maximum of $5,000 per month. August Home Publishing pays the entire premium for this policy on all full-time Professionals.

Short-Term Disability Insurance

This policy is intended to replace 60% of your base pay up to a maximum of $875 per week. August Home Publishing self-funds this policy on all full-time Professionals.

401(k) Plan

AHP Professionals, 21 or older, are eligible to participate in the company’s 401(k) plan on the first of the month following 30 days of employment. You direct all investments of your plan assets, choosing from a variety of funds. August Home Publishing’s 401(k) also accepts qualified roll-overs.

Corporate Profit Sharing

Each year a profit-sharing pool may be established based on the operating income of the company. It is used to fund a matching contribution to each eligible employee’s 401(k) account. The company may match up to 100% of the first 0% to 5% that the employee contributes depending upon contribution level in the 401(k) plan. This match is subject to a six-year vesting schedule.

Section 125/FlexPlan

Full-time Professionals can take advantage of our Section 125 flexible spending plan. You can have your health insurance premiums deducted from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis, as well as set aside pre-tax money for medical expenses, dependent care expenses and individual personal insurance policies.

Wellness at August Home

August Home Publishing is committed to promoting a healthy corporate culture for all of its Professionals. We do this by offering innovative health promotion programs and information. Some examples include yoga classes, walking programs, and “Lunch n’ Learns” on topics such as nutrition and stress. In 2004, August Home Publishing was awarded the Bronze “Well Workplace Award” through the Wellness Council of Iowa.

Wellness Reimbursement

All AHP Professionals & their spouses may be reimbursed 50% of the cost of a single membership in a fitness club, weight-loss program, or smoking cessation program, up to a maximum of $250 per year.

Fitness Facility

A recent addition to the August Home Publishing campus, the fitness facility is available to all AHP Professionals & their adult dependents. The facility includes numerous cardio machines such as treadmills, spinning bikes, and elliptical trainers, as well as a full assortment of free weights and weight machines.

Vacation and Paid Holidays

AHP believes that time away from work is needed to recharge intellectual and creative batteries and to keep Professionals enthusiastic about their work. That’s why in addition to the regular vacation days and 6 paid holidays, AHP Professionals also receive a Cabin Fever Friday in late February and a Founder’s Day in August. Vacation days are awarded as follows:

  • 0-3 years of service: 2 weeks of vacation (10 business days)
  • 4-9 years of service 3 weeks of vacation (15 business days)
  • 10+ years of service: 4 weeks of vacation (20 business days)

Paid Sick Leave

Full-time Professionals are eligible for 8 sick leave days. Sick pay cannot be accumulated from year to year but can be added to your sick leave bank for the purpose of a short-term disability or a qualified and approved FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) leave.

Products made or sold by August Home Publishing are available to our Professionals at a discount. This includes:

  • Reduced cost gift subscriptions to our magazines
  • Corporate discount at our retail woodworking store, The Woodsmith Store in Des Moines
  • Woodworking project kits and plans
  • Plus AHP offers reduced cost memberships to Zoos & Science Centers around the U.S.

Charitable Giving Program

August Home Publishing provides a pool of money for distribution to charitable organizations in the community. A committee of AHP Professionals directs the distribution of the funds to groups submitted by AHP staff. A sampling of groups and organizations receiving contributions in the last year include the Salvation Army, Hospice of Central Iowa, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, United Way, American Red Cross, Two Rivers Art Expo, Food Bank of Iowa, Toys for Tots, and the Des Moines Symphony. AHP Professionals also donate their time and talents in numerous volunteer efforts throughout each year.

Hiring Referral Bonus Program

AHP offers an employee referral bonus program to Professionals. If an AHP Professional refers a qualified candidate and that candidate is hired and works for 90 days, the Professional earns $500.

“First Friday” Informational Company Meetings

A monthly, company-wide gathering (guess which day it’s typically held) where AHP President/Founder Don Peschke and various department heads answer questions and bring everyone up to date with happenings around the company. Lunch is served free-of-charge.

Professional Development Director

AHP prides itself on being a learning organization. To help recruit, develop, and retain a productive and creative staff, our Professional Development Director coordinates the learning and training needs for all Professionals.

Research and Reference Libraries

Each magazine has its own research and reference library geared toward the magazine’s subject matter. AHP Professionals are free to check out books, videos, and back-issues of magazines.

Casual Attire

The attire at August Home Publishing, like the culture, is casual. Professionals are expected to look professional, but here that means you’ll see plenty of blue jeans, khakis, slacks, and open collars. On occasion, you might spot a necktie or a dress.
